8th March 2009 Windsurfing: Felixstowe-Fludyers Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: small chop Air Temperature: 9 Sea Temperature: 5 Weather: sun Max Speed: Distance Covered: Wind was a bit offshore and up-and-down but forecast to be cross-shore later so rigged 6m. OK after a couple of hundred yards and started to plane. Noticed I had run down wind so went for a long tack out to get back upwind. Bit if a jolt and my boom broke. So there I am a mile out with one side of my boom sinking in the North Sea, and it's cold. I tied the clew on to what was left of my other boom arm and tried to water start, for ages. Sail had negative outhaul of about a foot and lost all power. I was never going to start so sat on my board waving arms to get rescued. Only then did I realise there were no boats out so relied on Mark or a walker with binos. Mark D was sailing but could not see where I was - even in a flat sea waving arms were invisible. After about an hour of this I was getting cold and figured no one could see waving arms so decided to try and water start again. Wind seemed a bit stronger and the bag of a sail had more pull. Even if that didn't work I figured Mark might sport the sail and me having trouble. After much trying I got going and somehow sailed in to land well downwind by the Martello Tower. Hands were freezing and Darren had been driving to see where I got to and took my gear to his van - what a star. Rescue boat urned up, along with Coastguard van. Guys were great and I told them I'ld be OK after a hot cup of tea as they drove me back to Fludyers. Wind had picked up nicely and cross-shore, but I know when to quit, and t take a phone next time |
